In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports emerged of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not immediately provide further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a backdrop of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key events preceding this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Reportedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
