The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
